The model prayer

How should we pray? Jesus answered this important question by giving us the Lord’s Prayer, recorded in Matthew 6:9-13. The Lord’s Prayer serves as a model prayer. Consider how the outline and themes present in Jesus’ prayer can provide shape and direction for our prayer lives.

We should begin our prayers by saying: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Jesus teaches that prayer should begin with God. This sounds obvious, but how often do we pray prayers that focus only on us: our needs, concerns, desires, requests, complaints, and demands. Before we get to the details of our lives, Jesus encourages us to begin our prayers by giving honor, respect, and worship to God. Take a few moments when you start to pray to praise God and offer thanks. Making God the headline of our prayer has a way of centering and calming our hectic lives.
