City school district responds to church, state separation complaint

A local complaint alleging a Bowling Green High School football coach led a pre-game prayer prompted the Freedom From Religion Foundation to send a letter to Bowling Green Independent School District Superintendent Gary Fields, who said the prayer was student led.

“It is our understanding that Coach Kevin Wallace leads the high school football team in prayer,” wrote Rebecca Markert, a staff attorney with the FFRF. “Our complaint informs us that Coach Wallace, other coaches and the players recite the Lord’s Prayer before games.”…

    “Silent prayer in public places” is OK with me, however the spiritual rendering must be silent in public meetings, places, gatherings, court ordered programs, etc. “A few moments of silent prayer” or “a few moments of silence in observance of Life or of today’s gathering, (meeting, program, place, etc.)”
